Swimming to Victory

For many of us, exercising or playing a sport was an essential part of our childhood and teen years, bringing together fun, friendships, healthy competition, and physical fitness. Sports ignite passion, and for the residents in our home, watching games, discussing sports, or participating in exercise activities is a true highlight.

In light of the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, Wallsend Manor Aged Care resident, Min Welsh, shares with us her love for swimming and the friendships she made.

Min tells us that she began swimming at 8 years old. ‘I lived in Cessnock and joined local swim club at Cessnock pool,’ she says. ‘The best thing about it was the friendships I made and the fun we had competing.’

Min tells us that she would venture down to Sydney once a year to compete. ‘We used to go down to Sydney to compete at the Andrew Boy Charleton pool in Milson Point right next to the Harbour Bridge,’ she says. When asked what a highlight from her swimming days was, Min says, ‘Winning the district championship in freestyle many times.’

Min recalls that when she and her husband were younger, they had a swimming race between each other, and he offered to give her a head start. She told him she didn’t need one and off they raced. She was miles ahead of him and says that she ‘won easily’.

Now at the age of 95 and living at Wallsend Manor, Min enjoys participating in the exercise classes with the physio twice a week with her husband and friends she’s made here at the home.
