On this special occasion of Aged Care Employee Day, we celebrate Australia’s residential, home and community aged care workers. This year’s theme #ThanksForCaring recognises everyone involved in caring for older Australians. This year, we asked our wonderful Enrolled Nurse, Olivia Woods, to share her aged care journey and what working at Wallsend Manor Aged Care means to her.
What made you want to pursue a career in the aged care sector?
From a young age, looking up to my grandparents and wanting to give back to what they had done for me. Caring for the elderly is a privilege and rewarding Job. I have always had a soft spot for the elderly and I thank my grandparents for that.
What do you like most about your role and working at the home?
I enjoy providing better care and ensuring the elderly have the best care delivered to them as they deserve. I enjoy lighting up their faces every day and it does not feel like work here, it is an enjoyment with them daily.
What is most challenging about working in aged care?
I have had challenges in aged care and that is when I have a bond and a relationship with a resident and them passing away. They truly impact my life and day to day work.
What is a special memory you have from working at the home?
My Nan was looked after here till she passed away and coming on board not long after returning to aged care made me realise this is the job for me. I am passionate about caring and making a difference in these lives. Giving back to how they provided for us many years ago. This is not just a job to me.
